Self Consistent Nelson Tansu

A New research has done a self consistent analysis on Nelson Tansu.

This research find consistent self citation in the field of Physics and MOCVD of III-Nitride and III-V Semiconductor Optoelectronics Materials and Devices; III-Nitride and III-V Semiconductor Nanostructures for Solid State Lightings, Energy, and Communications; Photonics.

According to the definition: A self-citation is a reference an author provide in a document to other documents written by himself. Self-references may result from the cumulative nature of individual research, the need for personal gratification, or the value of self-citation as a rhetorical and tactical tool in the struggle for visibility and scientific authority. (http://www.iva.dk/bh/core%20concepts%20in%20lis/articles%20a-z/self_citation.htm)

We can use Scopus (http://www.scopus.com), a publication database to investigate this. You can do this at a university library.

Search for “Tansu, N” as author.

Now, Scopus only gives 148 papers (Not 220)
We can do a citation analysis.
Scopus gives a total number of citations = 1148, with h index = 19
But look at the 1148 citations, how many citation is due to Tansu himself. What is his self citation?
In Scopus select “Exclude from citations self citation of authors”
The result of Scopus five: Total citations: 598, h index = 13

It means that from the 1148 citations, 550 citations come from Tansu himself, almost half of the citation (48%) are self citation.
Nelson Tansu has a 50% self citation.
Congratulation, Tansu is a Self-Consistent Self-Citation.

You can prove it from his paper:
- Example no. 1
Gain and spontaneous emission characteristics of high Al-content AlGaN quantum well lasers. Zhang, J., Zhao, H., Tansu, N. 2010. 23rd Annual Meeting of the IEEE Photonics Society, PHOTINICS 2010 , art. no. 5698758, pp. 63-64
This paper has 12 references, and 5 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 42%

This paper has 13 references, and 11 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 85%

This paper has 26 references, and 23 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 64%

- Zhao, H., Liu, G., Tansu, N. Analysis of InGaN-delta-InN quantum wells for light-emitting diodes. Applied Physics Letters 97 (13), art. no. 131114
This paper has 38 references, and 16 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 42%

Zhao, H., Arif, R.A., Tansu, N. Design analysis of staggered InGaN quantum wells light-emitting diodes at 500540 nm
This paper has 28 references, and 7 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 25%

Read his CV here and look at his publications: http://www.ece.lehigh.edu/~tansu/pdf/Tansu_CV.pdf
Notice publication after year 2006 (No. 85 in his list), Tansu are all as last author. That means he just do nothing, and he asked people to put his name on the paper. If he’s such a great professor, his name will not be at the last of all the papers.
He claimed to have more than 220 papers, but only 148 papers are really counted as scientific papers by Scopus.

Here is another proof that Tansu is manipulating the citation to get a high h-index.
The h-index is an index to measure both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar. The index is based on the set of the scientist's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received.
A scientist has index h if he has published h papers each of which has been cited by others at least h times.
(Highlight by others, meaning you shouldn't cite yourself to get a high h index)
You can manipulate the h-index if you keep citing your own paper.

Remember the result from Scopus is h index = 19.
Here are examples:
Look at his top cited paper: Tansu N., Kirsch N.J., Mawst L.J. Low-threshold-current-density 1300-nm dilute-nitride quantum well lasers. 2002, Applied Physics Letters, (14) 2523
This paper has 116 citations, but 41 is due to Tansu, self citation 35%

And this is getting better
Tansu N., Mawst L.J.
Design analysis of 1550-nm GaAsSb-(In)GaAsN type-II quantum-well laser active regions 2003, IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics,
This paper has 20 citations, and 12 is due to Tansu, self citation 60%.

Ee Y.-K., Arif R.A., Tansu N., Kumnorkaew P., Gilchrist J.F.
Enhancement of light extraction efficiency of InGaN quantum wells light emitting diodes using Si O2 /polystyrene microlens arrays 2007, Applied Physics Letters, (22)
This paper has 19 citations, and 11 is due to Tansu, self citation 58%. Note this is his paper #19 ranked by citations. He keep on citing this paper so he can get a higher h index.

Tansu N., Yeh J.-Y., Mawst L.J.
Physics and characteristics of high performance 1200 nm InGaAs and 1300-1400 nm InGaAsN quantum well lasers obtained by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition
2004, Journal of Physics Condensed Matter
This paper has 19 citations, and 10 is due to Tansu, self citation 53%. This is his paper #20 ranked by citations. He will keep on citing this paper so he can get a higher h index.

Tansu N., Yeh J.-Y., Mawst L.J.
Improved photoluminescence of InGaAsN-(In)GaAsP quantum well by organometallic vapor phase epitaxy using growth pause annealing 2003, Applied Physics Letters
This paper has 18 citations, and 9 is due to Tansu, self citation 50%. This is his paper #21 ranked by citations. He will keep on citing this paper so he can get a higher h index.

You can see Tansu manipulate by citing his paper so he can get a high h index.

Nelson Tansu claimed to be a genius and youngest professor, but it is all due to consistent self citation. As the definition says it is a result of the need for personal gratification, as a tactical tool in the struggle for visibility and scientific authority.(http://www.iva.dk/bh/core%20concepts%20in%20lis/articles%20a-z/self_citation.htm)

According to research self citation is used as a promotional strategy. (http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=766448)

That is why this Tansu is a Self Consistent Self Citation Professor.
The research found Nelson Tansu manipulate his paper so that he has more citation.
