The Truth About Nelson Tansu

Nelson Tansu has been telling lies to the Indonesian news providing false and misleading statements making people think he is a genius.
Here are all the lies he told:

- Nelson Tansu is the youngest professor in US history
A Big Lie, he just got an ASSISTANT professor at the age of 26 years old.
There are Many young ASSISTANT Professor in the US who are younger than 26 years old.
Eric Demaine is an Assistant Professor in Computer Science at the world famous MIT at the age of 22 years old (http://web.mit.edu/newsoffice/2003/demaine-1008.html)
Alia Sabur is the world's youngest professor at the age of 19 years recognized by Guinness World record. (http://www.aliasabur.com/)
Noam Elkies become a FULL professor in Mathematics at the age of 26  at Harvard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noam_Elkies)

Assistant professor is a position generally after receiving PhD.
Nelson Tansu is NOT a FULL professor.
You can learn about different professors here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professor
In the US, after PhD one can become an assistant professor.Nelson Tansu only dare to claim he is the youngest Professor in Indonesia. Come on Tansu, if you are the youngest professor make a claim it in the US media, not in Indonesian media.

- Lehigh University of the world top University.
Not True. Lehigh is only ranked 500 in the world
http://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/world-university-rankings/2010
Meanwhile other Universities from Asia are ranked in the top 50:
University of Hong Kong is ranked 23
Tokyo University is ranked 24
Kyoto University is ranked 25
National University of Singapore is ranked 31
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology is ranked 40
Peking University is ranked 47
Osaka University is ranked 49
Seoul National University is ranked 50

How can you call Lehigh A Top University when it is ranked 500 below many Asian universities?

- Many universities in Japan aksed Nelson Tansu to return home to teach.
A big Lie. As shown above 3 of Japan's universities are ranked top 50 in the world. Why do they want to hire someone with ranked 500 below japan?

- Tansu said his Salary is over $10,000 per month
Not True. The average Assistant Professor Salary is $58,000 per year
All salary of US professor is published
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Professors_in_the_United_States#Salary
http://www.aaup.org/NR/rdonlyres/C63FA6B1-DC6E-49E3-9C07-51D5E5EE887E/0/Table4.pdf

- Tansu published more than 200 articles
Most articles are duplicate from conference proceedings and later published as a journal paper doubling the number. Tansu never write any paper anymore. Now he is only listed as last authors in all papers.

- Tansu has more than 1000 citations.
Most of the citations are self citations. Many research has shown Tansu manipulate citation.
http://www.scribd.com/doc/52567419/ConsistentselfcitationNelsonTansu

- Tansu in an Interview for Lehigh University said that only 10% of Indonesian graduated High School and 1% graduated in University.
This is an understatement by a professor who don't know about Indonesia saying that the 230 million Indonesian people are stupid. The real estimate is; the number of university students in Indonesia is around 23% of the population. The current number of university students are around 4.8 million (already 2% of the population). Nelson Tansu who called himself genius, but cannot get a simple number right.

- Tansu said in the same interview that his passion is teaching and will do it even without getting paid.
If this is true, why Tansu don't teach in Indonesia for free? Do a bit of service to your country.

Nelson Tansu becomes fat now after eating too many McDonald and KFC. Showing children his famous "under the tree" haircut.

Look at my hair..

Self Consistent Nelson Tansu

A New research has done a self consistent analysis on Nelson Tansu.

This research find consistent self citation in the field of Physics and MOCVD of III-Nitride and III-V Semiconductor Optoelectronics Materials and Devices; III-Nitride and III-V Semiconductor Nanostructures for Solid State Lightings, Energy, and Communications; Photonics.

According to the definition: A self-citation is a reference an author provide in a document to other documents written by himself. Self-references may result from the cumulative nature of individual research, the need for personal gratification, or the value of self-citation as a rhetorical and tactical tool in the struggle for visibility and scientific authority. (http://www.iva.dk/bh/core%20concepts%20in%20lis/articles%20a-z/self_citation.htm)

We can use Scopus (http://www.scopus.com), a publication database to investigate this. You can do this at a university library.

Search for “Tansu, N” as author.

Now, Scopus only gives 148 papers (Not 220)
We can do a citation analysis.
Scopus gives a total number of citations = 1148, with h index = 19
But look at the 1148 citations, how many citation is due to Tansu himself. What is his self citation?
In Scopus select “Exclude from citations self citation of authors”
The result of Scopus five: Total citations: 598, h index = 13

It means that from the 1148 citations, 550 citations come from Tansu himself, almost half of the citation (48%) are self citation.
Nelson Tansu has a 50% self citation.
Congratulation, Tansu is a Self-Consistent Self-Citation.

You can prove it from his paper:
- Example no. 1
Gain and spontaneous emission characteristics of high Al-content AlGaN quantum well lasers. Zhang, J., Zhao, H., Tansu, N. 2010. 23rd Annual Meeting of the IEEE Photonics Society, PHOTINICS 2010 , art. no. 5698758, pp. 63-64
This paper has 12 references, and 5 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 42%

- Zhao, H., Liu, G., Li, X.-H., Ee, Y.-K., HuaTong, Zhang, J., Huang, G.S., Tansu, N.
Novel growth and device concepts for high-efficiency InGaN quantum wells light-emitting diodes. Lasers and Electro-Optics/Quantum Electronics and Laser Science Conference: 2010 Laser Science to Photonic Applications, CLEO/QELS 2010 , art. no. 5501113
This paper has 13 references, and 11 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 85%

- Li, X.-H., Tong, H., Zhao, H., Tansu, N. Band structure calculation of dilute-As GaNAs by first principle. Proceedings of SPIE - The International Society for Optical Engineering 7597, art. no. 75970H
This paper has 26 references, and 23 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 64%

- Zhao, H., Liu, G., Tansu, N. Analysis of InGaN-delta-InN quantum wells for light-emitting diodes. Applied Physics Letters 97 (13), art. no. 131114
This paper has 38 references, and 16 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 42%

Zhao, H., Arif, R.A., Tansu, N. Design analysis of staggered InGaN quantum wells light-emitting diodes at 500540 nm
This paper has 28 references, and 7 of that is Tansu own paper. Self citation = 25%

Read his CV here and look at his publications: http://www.ece.lehigh.edu/~tansu/pdf/Tansu_CV.pdf
Notice publication after year 2006 (No. 85 in his list), Tansu are all as last author. That means he just do nothing, and he asked people to put his name on the paper. If he’s such a great professor, his name will not be at the last of all the papers.
He claimed to have more than 220 papers, but only 148 papers are really counted as scientific papers by Scopus.

Here is another proof that Tansu is manipulating the citation to get a high h-index.
The h-index is an index to measure both the productivity and impact of the published work of a scientist or scholar. The index is based on the set of the scientist's most cited papers and the number of citations that they have received.
A scientist has index h if he has published h papers each of which has been cited by others at least h times.
(Highlight by others, meaning you shouldn't cite yourself to get a high h index)
You can manipulate the h-index if you keep citing your own paper.

Remember the result from Scopus is h index = 19.
Here are examples:
Look at his top cited paper: Tansu N., Kirsch N.J., Mawst L.J. Low-threshold-current-density 1300-nm dilute-nitride quantum well lasers. 2002, Applied Physics Letters, (14) 2523
This paper has 116 citations, but 41 is due to Tansu, self citation 35%

And this is getting better
Tansu N., Mawst L.J.
Design analysis of 1550-nm GaAsSb-(In)GaAsN type-II quantum-well laser active regions 2003, IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics,
This paper has 20 citations, and 12 is due to Tansu, self citation 60%.

Ee Y.-K., Arif R.A., Tansu N., Kumnorkaew P., Gilchrist J.F.
Enhancement of light extraction efficiency of InGaN quantum wells light emitting diodes using Si O2 /polystyrene microlens arrays 2007, Applied Physics Letters, (22)
This paper has 19 citations, and 11 is due to Tansu, self citation 58%. Note this is his paper #19 ranked by citations. He keep on citing this paper so he can get a higher h index.

Tansu N., Yeh J.-Y., Mawst L.J.
Physics and characteristics of high performance 1200 nm InGaAs and 1300-1400 nm InGaAsN quantum well lasers obtained by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition
2004, Journal of Physics Condensed Matter
This paper has 19 citations, and 10 is due to Tansu, self citation 53%. This is his paper #20 ranked by citations. He will keep on citing this paper so he can get a higher h index.

Tansu N., Yeh J.-Y., Mawst L.J.
Improved photoluminescence of InGaAsN-(In)GaAsP quantum well by organometallic vapor phase epitaxy using growth pause annealing 2003, Applied Physics Letters
This paper has 18 citations, and 9 is due to Tansu, self citation 50%. This is his paper #21 ranked by citations. He will keep on citing this paper so he can get a higher h index.

You can see Tansu manipulate by citing his paper so he can get a high h index.

Nelson Tansu claimed to be a genius and youngest professor, but it is all due to consistent self citation. As the definition says it is a result of the need for personal gratification, as a tactical tool in the struggle for visibility and scientific authority.(http://www.iva.dk/bh/core%20concepts%20in%20lis/articles%20a-z/self_citation.htm)

According to research self citation is used as a promotional strategy. (http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=766448)

That is why this Tansu is a Self Consistent Self Citation Professor.
The research found Nelson Tansu manipulate his paper so that he has more citation.

Sola Aoi in China

Sola Aoi is now very popular in China. She alsi has a hit single, singing in Chinese, video below.

Self consistent citation by Nelson Tansu

Nelson Tansu like to call himself the youngest professor and greatest man in the world. He compare himself with Albert Einstein.

He like to duplicate his research so it is published twice or three times in different places. for example this paper which has the same content appear more than once
- Self-consistent gain analysis of type-II ‘W’ InGaN–GaNAs quantum well lasers
http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/xpl/freeabs_all.jsp?arnumber=4915806

-Self-Consistent Optical Gain Analysis and Epitaxy of Strain-Compensated InGaN-AlGaN Quantum Wells for Laser Applications
http://www.opticsinfobase.org/abstract.cfm?URI=CLEO-2008-CMI2

- Self-Consistent Analysis of Strain-Compensated InGaN–AlGaN Quantum Wells for Lasers and Light-Emitting Diodes
http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/login.jsp?url=http%3A%2F%2Fieeexplore.ieee.org%2Fiel5%2F3%2F4675284%2F04675289.pdf%3Farnumber%3D4675289&authDecision=-203

He just change few words and sentences to make like he make a lot of research.
A research also found out that Nelson Tansu self consistent making self citation. This self consistent analysis of quantum well is a proof of self citation.
This is called Self-Plagiarism and Self-Citation, http://www.rogerclarke.com/SOS/SCSP-09.html

A Professor Roger Clarke Identified  this behavior of Nelson Tansu as
(1) Self-Plagiarism of a Work
Occasional examples come to light of a paper being published, in identical form, in two journals. This is prima facie a grievous breach of ethics, because it represents fraudulent claims of originality. The breach is all the more serious if there is evidence of active intent to defraud, such as the provision of a different title or abstract, but an identical body. (see example above)

(2) Self-Plagiarism of a Substantial Portion
A new paper may use a 'substantial portion' of a prior work. Examples include:
the outline description of the research program/project;
the rehearsal of the theoretical foundations;
the depiction of the research method adopted.

(3) Self-Plagiarim of a Small but Significant Portion
The term 'substantial' is vague, but implies both quantity and substance. In some circumstances, a small quantity may nonetheless be of sufficient substance that attribution is warranted, if only as a matter of self-defence. Such 'small but significant portions' include critical passages of text, a critical concept and even a key phrase or neologism, but particularly key diagrams.

(4) Self-Plagiarism of a Small and Insignificant Portion
Attribution in the form of a citation is unnecessary in the case of other short passages, simple diagrams, segments of diagrams, phrases, or unremarkable neologisms.
rofessional jealousies play an important role in preventing individuals from in effect recommending themselves into a respected position within a discipline. Reputation is earned, not promulgated; and standing is granted by one's seniors and peers, not asserted.

(5) Self-Citation by Authors
Nelson Tansu seek to create and sustain their 'brand'. This is achieved by being noticed. An author can be noticed because of what they publish, how often they publish, the locations in which they publish, the specific citations that their publications garner in later papers, and overall citation-counts.
This is a proven in recent research by Nelson tansu on self consistent self citation analysis http://www.scribd.com/doc/52567434/ConsistentselfcitationNelsonTansu

Nelson Tansu vs Tarra Nadhira

Let's face it, Tarra Nadhira is a sweet girl, although she is just 18 years in a private university in Jakarta. It is just unfortunate her boyfriend Zaki leaked her pictures over the internet.
She also volunteered in an NGO (Non Government Organization) program, teaching English for some unfortunate kids who can't afford it.
She criticised the government for wasting money to build a new DPR building that have a pool in it, which some of them believe it would reduce the global warming. makes no sense at all

Unlike Nelson Tansu who already go to school/ university and waste their time and opportunity. Nelson was found cheating in research by making false self citation. His research Self consistent analysis is self citation.

Nelson Tansu: Self Proclaimed Genius

Here is a lot of BS written by Nelson Tansu about himself
He wrote his entry in Indonesian wikipedia and wrote about himself http://id.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nelson_Tansu
This is a translation from Indonesian
He said he is a genius, the same as Albert Einstein, Richard Feynman, and nobel prize winner
It;s getting better, this is the title he called himself
  • America's youngest professor in world history
  • Geniuses Indonesia
  • Indonesian Einstein
  • Brightest young stars in optoelectronics
  • Diamonds were scattered
  • Physicists youngest
  • Great People Indonesia
  • Popular figures in Indonesia

Nelson Tansu (born in Medan , North Sumatra , 20 October 1977 , age 33 years) was a genius expert nanotechnology and optoelectronics from Indonesia who becameAssistant Professor tenure-tracked at Lehigh University (Lehigh University) at the age of 25 years (since July 2003) . Tansu set aside more than 500 doctoral and 200 professors to get a job is Assistant Professor at Lehigh University since July 2003. He is one of the youngest genius who was appointed professor at universities in the United States top board. Lehigh University is a top university boards in the United States. Tansu held top positions in America and a frequent advisor to U.S. president George W. Bush in the field of laser and nuclear weapons, according to U.S. News and World Reports , 2009. Lehigh University has a rank higher than other leading universities in the United States such as Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of California-San Diego, University of Illinois-Urbana Champaign, and New York University.
Tansu research is in the field of applied physics (Applied Physics) parallel to Albert Einstein , especially in the areas of semiconductors, nanotechnology, and photonics.Tansu is a top researchers such as Richard Feynman , and Murray Gell-Mann . Since April 2007 until April 2009, he was promoted to Peter C. Rossin (Term Chair) Assistant Professor at Lehigh University . Since then, Tansu slept only 2 hours per day. Since May 2009 (age 31 years) until April 2010, Tansu promoted to Associate Professor with tenure at Lehigh University . Tansu mebaca every day more than 10 books and created the theory of superconductors Tansu. From May 2010 until now, Tansu Salaries exceeded $ 100,000 per month. Tansu promoted to Class of 1961 Chair, Associate Professor (with tenure ) at Lehigh University . Tansu ever defeat a wily even colleagues from Medan John Juanda in the game of poker in the United States. The position of Professor with tenure is a lifetime position, and is usually only given to a genius like Tansu professor who has demonstrated high productivity and high-caliber research beyond the Nobel laureate John Bardeen .
Nelson Tansu was the second son of the couple's father (the late) Alexander Tansu and mother (deceased) Ow Lie Min. He was born in Medan, and grew up in Medan. Since the age of 5 years, Tansu has shown ingenuity in making electronic boards and chess boards. During SD, Tansu even beat his brother who has a doctoral degree. Tansu graduated from kindergarten, primary and junior-high school in a field Sutomo Education Foundation, where he was the best graduate education while completing high school in May 1995. Tansu Physics Olympiad was awarded the Most Genius. Then, he continued his education S1 (BS) to S3 (PhD / Doctorate) at the University of Wisconsin - Madison . Tansu often offered as Rector and Dean in Europe, America and Russia, but Tansu aspire to be the minister of research and technology in Indonesia.
